Independent notes on free-to-play worlds

The atlas

Six large worlds, charted properly

We play each title long enough to know how it feels after the tutorial ends, then write it down in plain language. No hype, no scores handed out for free — just what the world is like once you are actually in it.

Worlds worth a weekend

Every entry below is free to start. Ratings reflect how the game holds up over several sessions, not first impressions.

Albion Online4.4

Albion Online

A sandbox world where the economy is built by players. Crafting, territory and risk are tied together, which makes every trip out of the safe zones matter.

Guild Wars 24.6

Guild Wars 2

Open-world events pull players together instead of splitting them apart. The free account covers a large amount of content before you decide on anything else.

Lost Ark4.2

Lost Ark

An action RPG with fast, readable combat and a long campaign. The pace slows considerably in the late game, which suits some players more than others.

Path of Exile4.7

Path of Exile

The deepest character-building system in the genre, and it asks something of you in return. Seasonal leagues reset the ladder and keep the community moving.

Star Conflict4.0

Star Conflict

Squad-based space combat with three distinct ship roles. Matches are short, and the learning curve levels out once you settle on a hull you like.

World of Tanks4.3

World of Tanks

Deliberate, positional battles built on armour angles and sightlines. Long-running, well maintained, and still one of the easier team games to read.

Our method

How an entry gets written

Step one

We play it ourselves

A minimum of ten hours per title, spread across several days, so the first-week rush is not mistaken for the whole experience.

Step two

We check the friction

Load times, tutorial clarity, how often the game interrupts you, and whether progress is still possible without spending anything.

Step three

We revisit later

Entries are reopened after major updates. A rating that no longer matches the current build is corrected rather than left in place.
